Publication ethics and malpractice statement

Copyright and Compensation

At the time of submission of an article, its author must declare that it has not been published or submitted simultaneously to other journals.

After acceptance of an article for publication, its author authorizes Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (by filling out a given format) to publish this paper in Theologica Xaveriana. Such authorization allows the university to publish it on paper and on line, or to include it in national and international databases.

Theologica Xaveriana authorizes the eventual reproduction of its articles in other media, as long as the editor is consulted previously, and the original source, Theologica Xaveriana, is quoted appropriately.

Authors will receive two printed copies of the corresponding issue where their papers have been published.

Decision-making and publishing processes of Theologica Xaveriana

Decision-making and publishing processes of Theologica Xaveriana are based on the following criteria: intellectual independence, integrity, transparency, originality, academic and research thoroughness, objectivity, justice, confidentiality, and unwavering respect to intellectual property and copyrights.

1. Intellectual independence

1.1 As a serial journal from the School of Theology at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (Bogota, Colombia), the University sponsors Theologica Xaveriana, with respect towards its policies, its editorial comittees and teams, and its publishing processes.

1.2 In general terms, the editorial decisions focus on the fulfillment of the Journal’s publication policies “Editorial Policy” ; in particular, such decisions pursue the regularity and punctuality of each issue, and intend to ensure the high academic standards of the material it publishes, in accordance to this Code of Conduct.

2. Integrity, transparency

2.1 All processes, relationships and criteria related to the Journal’s operation and to the publication of articles are regulated. Their description is published in Theologica Xaveriana’s website and in the booklet “Policies and Procedure Guidelines”, by the Publications Office, School of Theology, Javeriana University.

2.2 The above mentioned parameters and criteria are periodically checked over, in order to ensure the development and good management of the Journal, and to meet the views of readers, authors, reviewers, staff and committees’ members.

2.3 Authors who submit research, reflection and review articles must inform if their papers are the result of an investigation, a dissertation or other academic activity. In the first case, authors must inform about the project’s title, who funded it, its initiation and conclusion dates, and its register code.

3. Originality, and academic and research thoroughness

3.1 Authors must declare that their submissions have not been previously published or submitted simultaneously to other Journals.

3.2 Theologica Xaveriana Editors’ decision to accept or reject a paper for publication is based on the paper’s relevance to the remit of our Journal, and its scientific thoroughness; this is, its methodical, objective, analytical and interpretative spirit, its logical and progressive structure, its clear argumentation, its solid bibliographic support (based on respect for intellectual property and copyright) and its contribution to theological knowledge.

3.3 The decision to accept a paper for publication is communicated to the author by Theologica Xaveriana’s Editor. Such decision will only be reversed if problems of intellectual property or copyright, plagiarism, redundant publication or other misconducts are identified within the submission.

3.4 Theologica Xaveriana is a peer-reviewed academic publication: this means that submissions undergo an evaluation by external referees with the proper subject expertise. While under review, the process is double blinded: Editors mask the identities of both authors and peer reviewers.

3.5 The process until an article is accepted or rejected takes about three or four months, during which the Editor verifies its relevance and if it fulfills all formal requirements for publication; if not, the Editor sends the paper back to the author, for him or her to make the necessary formal adjustments; only then the peer review process takes place, and depending on the referees’ evaluation, the paper is sent again to the author, for its final correction.

3.6 By sending reviewers’ comments to authors, Theologica Xaveriana’s Editors not only intend to ensure the quality of the material to be published; they also consider it a right of those who are willing to undergo the peer review process.

3.7 All parts directly involved in the evaluation process, that is, peer reviewers, Editor and members of the Editorial Executive and Production Team must disclose any conflicts of interest that may affect their performance.

4. Objectivity and justice

4.1 Both Editors and authors will recognize any possible mistake found in any published article, and will publish corrections, clarifications or retractions when needed.

4.2  In order to encourage academic debate, Editors will always be willing to prioritize the publication of criticisms of published articles, and of the response given by the author of the criticized material.

4.3 When a paper is rejected, authors have the right to appeal against such decision
by writing to the Editor and presenting his or her point of view. If the author is still unsatisfied after the Editor’s reply, the complaint will be forwarded to the members of the Scientific Committee, with the corresponding documentation, in order for them to settle the issue and to communicate their decision to the author.

4.4 Editors will respond promptly to complaints from readers, authors, referees or members of the editorial committees, and are committed to deal with the situation that motivated dissatisfaction.

4.5 Offensive or libellous remarks from a reviewer will be considered by Theologica Xaveriana’s Editors as a situation of conflict of interest, and the paper criticised in such terms will be sent to a new referee.

5. Confidentiality

5.1 Editors and reviewers will ensure that material submitted to the Journal remains confidential while under review.

5.2 Authors will obtain written informed consent for publication from people who might recognize themselves or be identified by others because of any references of personal data, circumstances, locations or testimonies in the article.

6. Unwavering respect to intellectual property and copyrights

6.1 Theologica Xaveriana complies intellectual property laws and conventions and will take action against any form of misappropriation of intellectual work. Therefore, authors must acknowledge co-authors, any significant contribution to their article, and their research sponsors; they must also declare their bibliographical and information sources, and have permission, from copyright holders, for reproducing illustrations, tables and graphics previously published elsewhere.

6.2 Plagiarism, self-plagiarism and covert redundant publication are misconducts that Theologica Xaveriana’s Editors will always reject and pursue. If any of those problems is identified and confirmed during the evaluation process, the submission will not apply for publication, and Editors will seek further investigation of the case by competent bodies. If the problem is identified after the article´s publication, Editors will publish a retraction in the following issue of the Journal. The software used to detect plagiarism in manuscripts is iThenticate (http://www.ithenticate.com/

6.3 Authors provide Universidad Javeriana with written consent to publish their article in Theologica Xaveriana. Such authorization allows the university to publish it on paper and on-line, or to include it in national and international indexes and databases.

6.4 Theologica Xaveriana authorizes the eventual reproduction of its articles in other media, as long as the editor is consulted previously, and the original source, Theologica Xaveriana, is quoted appropriately.
